One of my friends gave our address to someone she knows at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Today we were surprised with a huge box on our front door - it was their "Bag of Hope" - full of literature, coloring books, children's books, a video AND a diabetic teddy bear named Rufus! He has a medical alert bracelet, and felt patches on his injection sites and felt hearts on his paws (for fingerpricks). They included a book about Rufus, and several books had pictures of kids with diabetes each holding their own Rufus. Hank immediately adopted him and asked for a blood tester for him. so we set Rufus up with a blood tester and a syringe and bottle of saline "insulin." Hank has been tending Rufus all day. He'll say "Oh no. Rufus is low. Gotta do a blood test." We've only had him 5 hours and I think poor Rufus has caught up to Hank on blood tests! (Hank's probably up to about 125 blood tests! 6 times a day for three weeks) Hank does the blood test and injection on Rufus all by himself. It is very sweet to watch.
