Rene had to finish up some end of the year projects on Greek mythology. She really likes mythology and enjoyed working on these.
THe first project is the story of Persephone and the Pomegranate Seeds. Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and taken the the underworld. Her mother Demeter was so upset that she turned the world to cold and winter, and begged Zeus to arrange her return. Zeus ordered Hades to return her, but only if she had not eaten anything from the underworld. Oops, turns out she had eaten 6 pomegranate seeds! So she could only return for 6 months of the year. During those months Demeter allows the world to blossom again... thus our seasons.
Here's a picture of Rene explaining the project to Grampa Jerry. The project turns upside down - one side shows Demeter in a barren world without Persephone, and the flip side is the underworld, with Persephone holding a pomegranate.

This is Atlas, holding up the world. Poor poor broken Atlas. He was made out of clay, and every time he was handled he broke in another place. I spent so much time trying to glue him together I broke my glue gun and had to run out and buy another one! This them morning I asked Rene to bring him over so we could finish up.... and she dropped him!! SHATTERED ATLAS! But he was glued back together, and is managing to hold the world up!
