The day before Easter our church had a "Blessing of the Baskets" and then an Easter egg storytime and hunt. Our girls eagerly placed their Easter baskets on the altar rail but I was getting worried because all the other baskets were big baskets full of food - ham, breads, wine, etc. It turns out it is an old Eastern European tradition to have bring all the food for Easter Dinner (that breaks the Lenten fasting) in a basket for blessing. Fr. Joe must have been talking straight to us when he said that was the origin of children's Easter baskets full of eggs and candy, and that it was okay for children's Easter baskets to be included in the blessing, LOL!
